Beginning of World War 1 Summary
In the beginning of World War 1, countries in Europe built up their armies and they made alliances with another. An alliance is an agreement nation make to support and defend each other. The two most important were the Allied Powers, or Allies, and the Central Powers. In 1914, World War 1 began. World War 1 began because Austria- Hungary declared war on Serbia. Serbia had an alliance with Russia, so Russia fought on Serbia's side. Then Germany invaded Belgium and France. France was allied with Russia. Some people were eager for the war. Yet, some Americans wanted to stay out of it. Young men signed up to serve in the military because of the strong nationalism in Europe. These young men did not know how long the war would last or how terrible the fighting would be.
